I have been working on using more critical thinking skills to teach my class. Tonight we used "hat full of quotes" taken from the book Teaching for critical thinking by Stephen Brookfield. I had my students read "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and then selected 6 different quotes from the story and had students first write what they thought the quote symbolized or meant to them and then put them in groups based on their quotes. The quotes were random so the class was mixed up-they didn't get to sit with their friends or seat mate! It went well. I had them write one paper based on their discussion of the quote and its context with the story. It helped them gain more confidence in critical thinking and connecting literature. I will definitely do this activity again.
I have also been using more youtube videos. There are so many great videos to use with literature!
